Unlike the stark colors of many of the local houses, the corner of Torment and 69th hosts a riot of color. Several Gypsy wagons - vardos - are arranged in a semi-circle on the grassy lawn in front of a large Victorian house.
The vardos are painted in a myriad of colors, and a welcoming blaze is roaring in a stone ring in the middle of the open semi-circle. Cages filled with bright-plumed birds hang from the vardos and an Oak tree that shelters the camp. Lively dance music is being played, mostly on violins and drums, though other instruments can also be heard.
An old woman sits in a chair near one of the wagons. She shuffles a deck of cards, and sometimes whispers glimpses of the future to passersby.
A sign reads "Stop and listen to the tales told by this fire. All are welcome, though harm to me or mine will not be tolerated." |
