Bloodpoints
Bloodpoints were the first sign of power in the game as it started out as a click-spam game similar to Outwar - biter links were the only thing that were used, and people would click it, and the vampire would gain one pint from them instantly.
Of course, once the city came into being late in 2002, this concept of power quickly whittled away to mean almost nothing but pretty numbers, though the process took it's time to complete. At first, the city was only a click and bite, then slowly, powers came into play. And the more powers became availible either through donating or quests, the less bloodpoints meant.
One of the main joys of bloodpoints are the ranks. Secondary, but also important, are it's effects on the maximum AP, albeit a slight modifyer only (at least above 100 BP. See below).

Maximum action points
The AP gauge that your vampire has determines the amount of rest you can give him before action points go to waste, before he oversleeps, so to speak. With 35 maximum action points as you start out, and a 30 minute recharge for one action point, you would have to move your vampire at least every 17 and a half hour for no action point to go to waste.

Thresholds
The possibly worst thing that Raven threw at veteran players was a bloodpoint limit to use items. The first limit ever in place was one with fifty bloodpoints needed, an irrelevancy, a clone killer, nothing more, and perhaps a slightly irritating itch.
Then the 'code of honour' came up and people screamed hell and murder and complained to Raven about how vampires could so easily harm others in the game. Raven shook his head for the better time of half a year before finally granting them their wish. He set the limit for the use of Holy Water to 200 bloodpoints... a hefty amount that could only be gained swiftly by a vampire with Suction.
Items since have came with a threshold pre-implemented. Unless otherwise stated, that threshold is 50 BP.
